The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Service Agency (NEMSA) have been directed to investigate the accident in Calabar which led to the death of about seven persons, with many injured. The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing issued a statement, Friday and mandated the two agencies to work with the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company PHED) to unravel the cause of the accident. The statement said, “NERC and NEMSA have been directed to thoroughly investigate the incident and its causes and to take regulatory action as appropriate. The Federal Government expressed sadness over the incident and death of football fans at the viewing center in Calabar, Cross River State. It also commiserated with the families of those who lost their loved ones in the accident stressing that its investigation would unravel the actual causes of the disaster and promised to make the report of the investigation public at the appropriate time. It would be recalled that seven persons died Thursday night while watching a football match between Manchester United and Anderlecht in a return leg of the Europe League quarterfinal match.
